a valley in Carnarvonshire, on the banksof the Llugwy, close to the picturesque bridge of Pont-y-Pair, and not far from its junction with the river Conway.The scenery is unusually varied and beautiful, and it haslong been chosen as the favourite rendezvous of Englishlandscape-painters in the summer and autumn months. It issurrounded by rocky glens and deep wooded valleys, whichopen out occasionally into broad fields and meadows, shadedby a variety of trees. Through these the mountain streams,the Machno, the Lledr, and the Llugwy, flow on towardstheir junction with the Conway, now sleeping in dark,deep salmon pools, and now foaming and fretting overhuge boulders, pent in between lofty walls of rock. Allthese streams are spanned by old and picturesque bridges,well known to lovers of art and Welsh scenery, and theirbanks also adorned by several ancient water-mills ; of these,Pandy Mill, on the Machno, is the chief, on account ofits romantic situation and the fine old oaks which surround

Starting from the vicinity of the beautiful Beaver Pool chap. xi.and the Beaver Bridge on the Conway, the old Holyheadroad follows upwards the banks of the river at some distancebelow the new road. You look down on one side into a deeprocky and richly-wooded pass of the Conway, not far fromits celebrated falls. This is the Faiery Glen, of which thefoliage is very varied and luxuriant; ferns and mosses alsoclothe the tops of the rocks, which are worn into manyfantastic shapes and hollows by the constant action of therunning stream. The views from the upper part of theroad are unsurpassed for grandeur and extent, by anythingin North Wales. The whole of the wild and beautiful valleyof the Lledr and Dolwyddelan is spread out before you,guarded on one side by the giant form of Moel Siabod, andbeyond these the peaks of the Glyder mountains and Snowdonmay be seen in the far distance in fine weather.
